Uruguay striker Luis Suarez will be leaving Atletico Madrid this summer after spending two seasons with the club. The La Liga giants announced the news in an official statement and on their social media.
The club also organized a farewell ceremony for Suarez following their last home match of the 2021-22 season against Sevilla on Sunday night.
“I want to thank every one of the Atletico fans, all of the staff, the people that work here every day,” said Suarez after the game. “It’s impressive the affection they showed me since I arrived, and I’ll never forget it. I’m so grateful.”
Despite his short time in Madrid, Suarez will be fondly remembered by the Atletico fans. In his first season with the club, he scored 21 goals in La Liga and was one of the key contributors to the club’s 2020-21 title-winning campaign.
The 35-year-old player wasn’t as prolific this season, struggling to find his touch in front of the goal. As a result, he only managed 13 goals in all competitions while slipping down the pecking order in the past few months.
Suarez, who previously starred for Liverpool and Barcelona, attracted interest from MLS clubs recently, but his arrival to the United States seems unlikely at the moment. Reportedly, Suarez wants to remain in Europe and already has several suitors, including Premier League side Aston Villa.
