Uruguay star striker Luis Suarez is close to extending his stay with Inter Miami past the 2024 MLS season. Speaking with reporters on Friday, Suarez confirmed that the talks between the club and his representatives about a new contract are currently underway.
Suarez joined Inter on a one-year deal ahead of the 2024 season after prematurely ending his stint with Brazil’s Gremio. It turned out to be a great piece of business for the MLS side, as Suarez scored 22 goals and added 10 assists in 33 matches across all competitions.
“My lawyer is talking to the club, but I am with a calm mind,” Suarez said told the reporters. “I am going to finish the season in the best possible way, which is what I wanted and to show the club that one comes with desire, feels good physically and with the hope to continue being part of the history of this club.”
Inter Miami’s head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino also wants Suarez back for 2025.
“Of course, all the high-class players like Luis that we can have and put together much better,” Martino said when asked about Suarez’s extension. “So surely if the possibility is given that it will happen.”
Thanks to Suarez’s contributions, Inter is currently sitting at the top of the Eastern Conference with 71 points and has already secured the Supporters’ Shield trophy. With one game left to play, they can break the MLS record for most points in a single season if they get a win in the regular-season finale against the New England Revolution. Curiously, it is the Revolution that holds the current record, having won 73 points in 2021.
