The San Diego Padres leadoff hitter Luis Arraez’s remarkable streak of 141 consecutive no-strikeouts came to an end.
Arraez struck out in the second inning of Padres’ 3-1 win over the Houston Astros. He faced right-hander Spencer Arrighetti and capitulated on the ninth pitch with a swing and miss on a curveball.
Prior to the Astros game, Arraez went for more than a month without a strikeout. His 141 plate appearances during that time marked the longest streak since the 2004 season when Colorado Rockies Juan Pierre had 147 consecutive no-strikeouts. It was also the second-longest streak in Padres history, trailing only Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn’s 170 plate appearances without a strikeout in 1995.
“It’s been a privilege to be a part of it, to watch this guy perform,” said Padres manager Mike Shildt of Arraez. “He’s a magician with the bat in his hand. He’s got this wonderful combination of bat-to-ball skill, and he’s got this tremendous approach.”
Arraez joined the San Diego Padres in May in a trade from the Miami Marlins. In 108 games he played with the Padres since then, the three-time All-Star batted .330 with four home runs, 38 RBIs, and nine stolen bases.
