LSU’s quarterback Jayden Daniels is the 2023 Heisman Trophy winner. Daniels has been recognized as the best player in college football in the past season at a ceremony held at New York City’s Lincoln Center on Saturday night.

Daniels received 503 first-place votes and had a total of 2,029 points from a voting committee consisting of media members, fans, and previous Heisman Trophy winners. He left behind Washington’s signal-caller Michael Penix Jr. (292 first-place votes), Oregon’s QB Bo Nix (51 first-place votes), and Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr. (20 first-place votes).

Daniels finished the 2023 college season with 3,812 passing yards and 40 passing touchdowns while only throwing four interceptions. The 22-year-old San Bernardino, California, native also added 1,134 rushing yards and 10 TDs on the ground. He joined fellow Heisman Trophy-winner Johnny Manziel as the only SEC player to have at least 3,500 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in a single season.

Daniels, who transferred to LSU from Arizona State in 2022, is the fifth transfer to win the Heisman in the past seven years. He gives LSU its third Heisman Trophy winner in the university’s history, following the footsteps of Billy Cannon (1959) and Joe Burrow (2019).

LSU finished the 2023 college season with a 9-4 record. They are set to play in the ReliaQuest Bowl against Wisconsin.
