Liverpool has completed another big job this summer. English giants have announced on Friday that they have signed Switzerland’s star Xherdan Shaqiri from Stoke City. The 26-year-old signed a five-year deal with the club after Liverpool activated his $17 million release clause.

I’m very happy to be here. It’s a huge club with a big history, big players, and a fantastic coach,” – said Shaqiri in an interview for Liverpool’s official website. “So I’m really glad and happy to be here. As a player, you always want to be on the biggest stage in football. A few years ago I wanted to come too but it didn’t happen. I’m really happy that now I’m finally here.

Xherdan Shaqiri played extremely well for Stoke City in the last season, scoring eight goals, but couldn’t save his team from relegation to England’s second league. He was expected to leave this summer and attracted interest from various English and foreign clubs, but eventually decided to join Liverpool.

I think the English phrase to explain the decision to sign Xherdan is a ‘no-brainer’. When someone like him becomes available in this way you have to react if you are smart – and we have,” – said Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. “He has speed and ability, has the right amount of arrogance on the football pitch, real bravery to want the ball and influence things. To play for us these are mandatory requirements.

Xherdan Shaqiri started his career with FC Basel before securing a transfer to German powerhouse Bayern Munich in 2012. He struggled to find playing time with Bayern, so he decided to go to Italy in 2015, where he signed with Inter Milan. His stint with Inter lasted only six months, and he was on the move once more, this time joining Stoke City. Shaqiri also has 70 caps for Switzerland national team.
