Liverpool defeated Manchester City 3-1 at the King Power Stadium on Saturday to win the FA Community Shield for the first time since 2006.

The game got off to a fast-paced start, with Liverpool gaining the edge when fullback Trent Alexander-Arnold fired home a cross from Mohamed Salah in the 21st minute. Man City then piled on the pressure, with new striker Erling Haaland attempting two shots without success before the halftime whistle.

After the break, neither team managed to assert their dominance, and in the 70th minute, new Man City signing Julian Alvarez drew level just minutes after being subbed on. City’s comeback didn’t last long, however, as just 13 minutes later, the referee needed the assistance of VAR to award Liverpool with a penalty after Darwin Nunez headed the ball into the hand of Ruben Dias, with Salah slotting the penalty home with ease.

In the 4th minute of additional time, Nunez extended the Reds’ lead as he headed the ball past goalkeeper Edison, thereby sealing Liverpool’s triumph. “Our season started today, and it was important for us to get off on the right foot,” Trent Alexander-Arnold stated during a post-match interview.
