Current Champions League winners Liverpool bested historic rivals Arsenal 3-1 in their latest Premier League fixture. The Reds got off to a flying start, constantly bombarding the Arsenal defense with shots throughout the first half. With the half-time whistle fast approaching, Joel Matip opened the scoring with a finely-tuned header to give Liverpool the half time lead.
While the Gunners did manage to briefly subdue the Liverpool attack after the half time break, the Reds soon doubled their lead through a Mohamed Salah penalty. Liverpool continued to knock on the door of the North London side until Salah bagged a second just nine minutes later to place the final nail in the coffin for the Gunners.
At 3-0 down, the visitors finally managed to string together some more frequent attacking movements. They eventually pulled one back through a Lucas Torreira strike in the 85th minute, however, the comeback came too late as Liverpool grabbed a well-deserved three points to take them to the top of the league table.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had this to say following the final whistle: “I loved the desire, the passion, the power and the energy that we put into this game. It made us really uncomfortable to play against, which is what we wanted and so we deserved the first goal.”
