As the NFL trade deadline approaches, the trades keep rolling in. In one of the more surprising transactions, which took place on Tuesday, Detroit Lions traded away team captain and starting safety Quandre Diggs to Seattle Seahawks.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Lions sent Diggs and a seventh-rounder to Seahawks while getting a 2020 fifth-round pick in exchange.

Diggs leaves Detroit with the three-year left on his $20.4 million contract extension he signed last year. The 26-year-old made 20 tackles in the four games he played in 2019.

Quandre Diggs, who was Lions’ sixth-round pick in 2016, managed to establish himself as one of the team’s most reliable players in the secondary in the previous two seasons. In 2018 alone, Diggs contributed with 78 tackles, eight passes defended, three interceptions, and one touchdown. This kind of performance even landed him on the Pro Bowl alternate list.

This season, however, Diggs was a shadow of his former self. He had injury issues while also struggling when on the field. Lions were especially alarmed by the number of tackles he missed, so they ended up making a business decision and traded him.

After the trade was announced, Diggs went on social media, where he thanked the Lions’ fans and organization for the support.

“Lions fans I love you guys from the bottom of my heart you guys deserve the best, made me feel at home and kept the stadium rocking!” – wrote Diggs on Instagram. “Seattle let’s get it!! Ready to get to work and win more games!! Too hyped!!”
