According to a source close to the matter, the Detroit Lions have decided to release wide receiver Breshad Perriman. The decision to part ways with the veteran player comes as a surprise, particularly since the Lions signed him just five months ago.

Perriman signed a one-year deal worth $3 million with the Lions in March. At the time of his signing, Perriman was believed to have been brought in to stabilize Detroit’s receiving corps along with fellow new signing Tyrell Williams.

Perriman has so far endured a challenging summer period, suffering from a hip injury that caused the 27-year-old player to struggle during training camp as well as the preseason.

Should news of Perriman’s release prove to be accurate, the Lions will have to choose his replacement among fellow receivers Tyrell Williams, Quintez Cephus, and 21-year-old rookie Amon-Ra St. Brown.

Prior to his arrival in Detroit, Perriman appeared in 12 games last season for the New York Jets. During that time, he made 30 interceptions and scored three touchdowns. Perriman has also previously played for the Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, and Tampa Bay Buccanneers.
