Linebacker KJ Wright Won’t Take a Discount to Stay With Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks will have to pay the full price in order to keep veteran linebacker KJ Wright on their roster.

In a recent chat with CBS Sports Radio, Wright said that he wants to continue playing for the Seahawks but doesn’t intend to “take a discount” in order to make that happen. The 31-year-old veteran, who spent his entire pro career with the Seahawks, is set to hit free agency in March.

“I do way too much on the football field to take a discount,” said Wright to host Jim Rome. “It makes absolutely no sense. If you want to win all these championships and look good on Sundays, you’ve got to compensate your guys that are making plays.”

Keeping Wright on the market value might be challenging for the Seahawks, as they are currently barely under the salary cap while having several other pressing needs to take care of. The player is well aware of this but believes his stay can happen if the organization puts some effort into it.

“They’ve got to clear some space to make things happen, so they’ve got to get busy,” he added.

KJ Wright has been a mainstay in the Seattle Seahawks defense since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He made 140 starts for the franchise in the previous 10 seasons while helping the Seahawks win Super Bowl XLVIII.

Wright has 940 career tackles with 13.5 sacks, 54 pass deflections, 11 forced fumbles, and six interceptions. He was a Pro Bowler in 2016 and received an All-Pro selection in 2015.
