Tom Thibodeau has agreed to a three-year extension with the New York Knicks which will take him through to the 2027-28 season. The Knicks head coach is a two-time NBA Coach of the Year, building up the Knicks over the past few seasons to lift them to the number two ranking in the Eastern Conference last season following a 50-32 regular season performance.
Having won just one playoff series between 2001 and 2022, the Knicks significantly improved their form under Thibodeau, reaching the semifinals of the Eastern Conference over the past two seasons.
In the Knicks’ history, Thibodeau’s team ranks fifth with 175 wins while reaching the NBA playoffs on three out of four occasions. Data from ESPN Stats & Information also showed that the Knicks under Thibodeau were ranked within the top 10 in the NBA for both offensive and defensive efficiency last season.
Having grown up in New Britain, Connecticut, Thibodeau is a lifelong Knicks fan, making his current role a dream job. He went on to serve as a Knicks assistant coach under Jeff Van Gundy from 1996 to 2003. Before becoming the Knicks’ head coach, Thibodeau served as the head coach of the Chicago Bulls from 2010 until 2015 and the Minnesota Timberwolves from 2016 to 2019.
