Jose Mourinho’s reign as Manchester United’s manager has come to an end. The news was reported by various media outlets on Tuesday morning, with the club making the confirmation several hours later.

Mourinho reportedly received the news in person from executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect,” – a statement posted on Man Utd’s official website said. “The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future. A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.”

Michael Carrick, who is the club’s former star and current assistant coach, will reportedly take the role of the interim coach alongside academy chief Nicky Butt.

Man Utd is expected to pursue some high profile names as Mourinho’s successor, including Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino and former Real Madrid’s head coach Zinedine Zidane.

While Jose Mourinho was on the hot seat for some time, it was expected that Manchester United will postpone the decision about the coaching change until the season is over. Still, it looks like relationships in the club’s locker room were worse than anyone thought, and the front office decided to act now.

Mourinho managed to lead Man Utd to the second place in the Premier League last season, but things didn’t look great in 2018-19. Although the club made it through the group stage of UEFA Champions League, they were displaying poor play and struggled in the Premier League, where they currently sit on the sixth spot, being 19 points off the first place. The fact that the 55-year-old Portuguese manager clashed with some of United’s biggest stars like Paul Pogba also didn’t help his case, and he will now have to look for another job.
