John Herdman is no longer the head coach of Toronto FC. The MLS side announced earlier this week that Herdman decided to resign from the position after spending just one season with the club.
Herdman, who was previously a head coach for Canada’s national team, took over Toronto FC in August 2023. He compiled a 16-6-22 record in all competitions, including 11-4-19 in MLS, that saw Toronto finish 11th in the Western Conference and outside the MLS Cup playoffs.
In a club-released statement, Herdman said that he believed it was the right time for him to step down.
“Personally, I have made the difficult decision that it’s the right time for me to step away from the club, as the organization defines its vision for the future,” Herdman said. “ … I wish the organization success going forward, and I look forward to the next chapter in my career.”
Toronto FC has been going through a tough period for the past several years despite making heavy investments in their roster. The 2017 MLS Cup champions failed to qualify for the playoffs in the past four seasons while also relinquishing their dominance in the Canadian Championship. Herdman was the club’s fifth head coach during that period.
A number of other MLS clubs are currently looking for a new head coach. Aside from Toronto FC, the list also includes Atlanta United, Philadelphia Union, New York City FC, and Vancouver Whitecaps.
