Star center Joel Embiid has repeatedly said that he wants to spend his entire career with the Philadelphie 76ers. Now, he is one step closer to doing that after inking a new contract with the franchise.
The 76ers announced on Friday that Embiid agreed to a multi-year extension without revealing the details of the agreement.
Reportedly, Embiid’s new extension is for three years and worth $192.9 million, the most Philly was able to give him. He is now under contract through the 2027-28 season and has a player option for 2028-29 while being guaranteed a total of $299.55 million.
“I started a Sixer and want to be right here for the rest of my career. I had no idea when I was drafted as a 20-year-old kid from Cameroon how lucky I was to be in Philadelphia,” Embiid said in a statement. “Through all the ups and downs, this city and the fans have been everything, and I am so grateful for how they’ve embraced me … Philadelphia is home, and it’s time to bring this community an NBA championship.”
The contract is somewhat of a gamble for the 76ers, considering that Embiid struggled with injuries throughout his career. However, when healthy, he was one of the best players in the league.
After winning MVP honors in 2022-23, Embiid was limited to just 39 games last season due to a knee injury. He finished the regular season averaging 33.6 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 5.6 assists.
Embiid appears to have left the injury issues behind, having played at the 2024 Paris Olympics this summer and helped Team USA win a gold medal.
