As much as the sports world can seem like a bubble, the barriers to the outside world are sometimes broken. This was proven when actress Jodie Foster involved Green Bay Packers legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers in her speech at the Golden Globes.

On Sunday night’s Golden Globes ceremony, Foster returned a favor to the football player that no one expected. After winning the award for Best Supporting Actress in the film The Mauritanian, she walked up to the podium to give her speech. By the time she was done, she had thanked Rodgers—and the reason wasn’t exactly clear.

Apparently, the main reason for this stems back to Aaron Rodgers’ MVP acceptance speech earlier this month. In the speech, he had cryptically announced his engagement to actress Shailene Woodley—and thanked Jodie Foster as well. Foster and Woodley, perhaps not inconsequential to the story, starred together in The Mauritanian.

Foster is apparently a huge Packers fan, which may have contributed to her shoutout. But as it turns out, she’s not even that close with Rodgers, which is why she herself was surprised when she was originally “thanked” at Rodgers’ speech.

As a result, she said that if she won the Golden Globe, she would return the favor—which is why she did what she did on Sunday night.
