New York City FC announced on Friday that Norwegian striker Jo Inge Berget would be leaving the club after a mutual termination of contract.

The 28-year-old former Cardiff player spent one year in New York, scoring four goals and making three assists in 23 MLS regular season appearances last season. He also had one appearance in the playoff before he was linked with a move back to his native country this month.

While details of his contract’s termination were not revealed, Berget did not live up to the hype. Despite signing to an annual salary worth $816,000 last year, the 28-year-old was unproductive most of the times he played. He scored only one goal in his 12 appearances for the club and scored only one more goal in the next ten matches.

Before he joined the MLS, Berget played for Malmo and scored 10 goals in his final season to help the club lift the Swedish Allsvenskan title. He played alongside his NYFC fullback counterpart Anton Tinnerholm back them.

In his home country of Norway, Berget has had 20 caps and 2 goals for his national team. His rumored destination is home-based Molde, a club he’s appeared for 63 times and scored 17 times. With Inge and David Villa’s recent departures, NYFC is left without a striker in its roster this preseason.
