Despite their playoff chances being all but gone after Sunday’s 26-21 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, the New York Jets don’t intend to make a switch at the quarterback position, according to interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich.
Jets’ star QB Aaron Rodgers delivered arguably his worst performance of the season against the Seahawks, having a completion percentage of 53.8% while throwing for just 185 yards. He also threw a crucial red-zone interception that was returned for a touchdown.
Overall, Rodgers is struggling this season, which caused rumors that his status as a starter is in jeopardy. It is also worth pointing out that Jets’ owner Woody Johnson wanted to bench Rodgers earlier in the season before being talked out of it.
However, when asked about whether Rodgers’ could be benched, Ulbrich said that the four-time NFL MVP’s job is safe as he gives the team the best chance to win.
“He’s our quarterback,” said Ulbrich. “… We have great belief in Aaron. We think he gives us the best opportunity to win.”
When he was traded to the Jets in 2022 from the Green Bay Packers, Aaron Rodgers was viewed as a savior of the NY Jets. However, his first season with the franchise ended after just four plays due to an Achilles injury, and his second season could hardly have gone worse.
Throughout 13 weeks, the Jets are 3-8 while Rodgers threw for 2,627 yards, 19 touchdowns, and eight picks.
The belief around the league is that Rodgers’ time with the Jets will be over after this season. The franchise is looking for a new general manager and head coach while being expected to enter a rebuild. Meanwhile, a poor season like this will limit Rodgers’ chances of finding a new job and could potentially push him towards retirement.
