The New York Jets’ quarterback carousel continues. In another unexpected move, the Jets decided to release veteran quarterback Tim Boyle, according to a report by CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson.

Aside from releasing Boyle, who started under center in the previous two games, the Jets are signing quarterback Brett Rypien off of the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad. Rypien is in his fourth season in the league and has 58.3% career pass completion with 950 passing yards, four touchdowns, and nine interceptions.

Since losing Aaron Rodgers to an Achilles injury in Week 1, the Jets struggled to find consistency at the quarterback position. Rodgers’ backup, Zach Wilson, made nine starts but was demoted to the third string due to bad performances. The New York team then handed over the offense to Boyle, and the 29-year-old didn’t even manage to last for two full games, being benched in favor of journeyman Trevor Siemian in last week’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

There were reports that the Jets are leaning towards circling back to Wilson for Week 14 but that the former second-overall pick is unsure whether he wants the opportunity again. Jets’ head coach Robert Saleh later refuted these reports, saying that Wilson would accept the starting job.

“The young man wants the ball. He wants to start. He believes he’s the best quarterback in the room and the best quarterback for this team and the guy who gives us the best chance to win,” said Saleh while adding that he still hasn’t made the final decision on who’ll start against the Houston Texans next Sunday.
