The New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is approaching the upcoming regular-season finale against the Miami Dolphins as if it’s his last game in the NFL.
“Yeah, of course, yeah,” Rodgers said when asked whether this might be a possibility.
The 2024 season was a disastrous one for both the Jets and Rodgers. The Jets extended their postseason drought to 14 years, currently sitting at 4-12, and fired both their head coach and general manager.
Rodgers, on the other hand, was rusty after the injury and unable to lift a talented team in the way he was expected when the Jets traded for him in 2023. He completed 63.0% of his passes while throwing for 3,623 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. It was only the fourth time in his 17 seasons as a starter that he had double digits in interceptions.
When asked directly whether he is considering retirement, Rodgers said that he first needs to rest before making a decision. He considered retiring on a number of occasions in recent years.
“I need a break mentally, and I don’t want to make a decision until I’ve been able to rest mentally and physically,” Rodgers told reporters.
Rodgers also said that the decision about his future in the NFL might not be up to him.
“I think there’s going to be change here, and if I’m a part of the change, then I just want to make sure everybody knows that I have nothing but gratitude for my time here,” he added.
The Jets will enter the offseason with an entirely new regime, and it remains to be seen whether the new head coach and GM pairing want Rodgers as their quarterback in 2025. Previous reports indicated that the split between Rodgers and the Jets is the most likely outcome, considering his struggles this season and strained relationship with owner Woody Johnson.
