Jerry Stackhouse Agrees to a 6-Year Deal with Vanderbilt University

Memphis Grizzlies’ assistant Jerry Stackhouse has got tired of waiting for a NBA head coaching job and is heading now to college basketball. Vanderbilt University announced on Friday that they have hired Stackhouse as the coach of their Commodores men’s basketball team. The 44-year-old will replace Bryce Drew who was fired following a 9-23 season.

According to ESPN‘s Adrian Worjanowski, Stackhouse will ink a six-year deal with Vanderbilt.

“Jerry brings a unique mix of experience as a legendary player and successful coach, and I fully expect he’ll take the program to new heights,” – said Vanderbilt’s athletic director Malcolm Turner. “I’ve spoken with people inside and outside both college and professional basketball, and there is unanimous agreement that Jerry’s competitiveness, grit and tireless focus on player development are a perfect fit to advance the `Vanderbilt Way’ in college athletics.”

Jerry Stackhouse, who earned two All-Star appearances during his 18 seasons in the NBA, started his coaching career in 2015 as an assistant with Toronto Raptors. In 2016 he became the coach of Raptors’ D League affiliate Raptors 905 with whom he won the title in 2017. In the past few years, the 44-year-old interviewed for several head coaching jobs in NBA but failed to land one and ended up taking the assistant position with Grizzlies.

Stackhouse will now look to make a name for himself in college basketball and bring back Commodores to winning ways.

“I look forward to furthering Vanderbilt’s unique approach to athletics – blending a powerhouse competitive spirit with elite academics to holistically develop talented student-athletes and celebrate victories on and off the court,” – Stackhouse said in a statement.
