Amazon founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos has hired the boutique investment firm of Allen & Company to help him explore the possibility of submitting a bid to acquire the Washington Commanders. This is the same firm that oversaw the sale of the Denver Broncos last year as well as the Carolina Panthers in 2018.

Bezos, who also owns the Washington Post, was initially reported to still be in the early phases of considering a bid for the team, however, this move signals stronger intent. As the third-richest person in the world with a net worth of $119 billion, Bezos is expected to be able to outbid any rivals, thereby giving rise to the belief that he will indeed move to take over the team.

Leading up to a potential bidding war, at least one interested group and possibly two have reportedly been given a tour of the Commanders’ facilities. To date, the only other known bidder is Josh Harris, who received one such tour. Harris, who grew up in the Washington area, is no stranger to sports team ownership. He holds ownership stakes in the Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Devils and is a limited partner of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
