Second baseman Jake Cronenworth has signed a seven-year extension with the Sand Diego Padres, the team announced on Saturday. This extension, worth $80 million, will be valid through the 2030 season. He is set to make $4.23 million this year.
Prior to putting pen to paper on the deal, Cronenworth was set to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2025 season. Now, five of his free-agent seasons have been bought out by the Padres.
While the Padres have secured some high-profile trades over the years, the team has been looking to nurture its own in-house talent in recent months. Cronenworth is no exception, having increased his strikeout rate from .266/.340/.460 in 2021 to .239/.332/.390 in 2022. Although a seventh-round pick, he has proven to be a staple in the Padres’ lineup, batting fifth behind Fernando Tatis Jr., Juan Soto, Manny Machado, and Xander Bogaerts.
In addition to Cronenworth, the Padres have agreed to extensions with Machado, Yu Darvish, and Joe Musgrove.
