The Jacksonville Jaguars have shut down their quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, for the remainder of the 2024 season. The decision comes after Lawrence suffered a concussion during Sunday’s loss to the Houston Texans.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Lawrence is also expected to undergo shoulder surgery in order to address an AC joint injury.
This marks the end of a disappointing campaign for Lawrence, his first since being handed a massive five-year, $275 extension. He dealt with multiple injuries while struggling with production when he was on the field.
In 10 games played in 2024, Lawrence completed 60.6% of his passes, the lowest since his rookie year, while throwing for 2,045 yards, 11 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
Sidelining Lawrence was an easy decision for the Jags, considering they have nothing left to play for in 2024 except maybe their honor. They currently sit at the bottom of the AFC South with a 2-10 record and are likely heading towards a Top 3 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
When Lawrence returns in 2025, a lot of things will likely be different. General manager Trent Baalke and head coach Doug Pederson are on the hot seat after what will be the second-straight year of playoff drought and are expected to be without the job after the season ends.
In Lawrence’s absence, Jacksonville will turn to backup Mac Jones as their starter. Jones played five games this season, including two starts, and completed 62.0% of his passes and threw for 512 yards, two TDs, and three interceptions.
