Linebacker Telvin Smith is staying with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The team announced on Wednesday that they have signed Smith to a 4-year extension. Although the financial details were not revealed, it is believed that the deal is worth up to $50 million.

This is an expected move from the Jags, given the fact that Smith is in the final year of his rookie deal and leads the team in tackles this season. He just missed two games during his 3 and a half years with the team and currently has 408 tackles in his professional career. Tom Coughlin, the Jaguars’ executive vice president of football operations, said that Smith is an important player for the team and deserved his new contract.

Telvin has been a productive player and an important part of our defense, and he has earned this second contract,” – Coughlin said. “We want to identify the players who will contribute to help this team win going forward and reward those who can do that. Telvin is certainly one of those players for us.

Telvin Smith also expressed his enthusiasm about the new contract and the team’s future.

It’s been a privilege these last four years, and there is so much that I want to accomplish as a teammate and as an individual in this league,” – Smith said. “We have created a bond in that locker room, and everyone is committed to our goal of winning football games. I am honored to be a part of that culture and help continue to lead this team in the right direction.

Smith was drafted by the Jaguars with the 144th overall in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He started 47 of the 53 games played for the Jags and added 6 interceptions and 2 defensive touchdowns to his 408 tackles.
