Inter Miami won’t pursue Benfica’s winger Angel Di Maria, according to head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino.

Di Maria, who is the teammate of club star Lionel Messi on Argentina’s national team, has been linked with Inter for quite some time now. It was believed that the MLS side is waiting for Di Maria’s contract with Benfica to expire in the summer before bringing him to the United States.

However, Martino recently told Paraguayan radio Monumental that Miami isn’t in the position to sign players like Di Maria due to MLS roster rules.

“There is nothing that has been officially received from the sports director regarding Ángel [Di María],” Martino said. “The league has certain economic restrictions, some limits, and we are complying with them well within that rule. But today I do not see any type of hiring as feasible, especially such exceptional players.”

Inter Miami currently has Messi, forward Leonardo Campana, and midfielder Sergio Busquets as Designated Players. Two other former Barcelona stars, Luis Suárez and Jordi Alba, are believed to be on salaries that take up a large chunk of the team’s salary cap.

Ángel Di María signed a one-year deal with Benfica, the club where he started his European career in 2007, this past summer. He has been enjoying quite a productive season, scoring 16 goals and adding 15 assists in 46 games in all competitions.
