Inter Miami’s brass is not worried about losing their superstar forward, Lionel Messi, anytime soon. Speaking with the media earlier this week, Inter’s owner Jorge Mas said that he expects Messi to continue playing for the club beyond 2025.
Messi is currently under contract through 2025, and Inter Miami doesn’t have a club option to extend the deal for another season. However, Mas intends to have discussions with the player in the near future and ensure he is there when the club moves into their new stadium, Miami Freedom Park, in 2026.
“Messi is under contract through 2025, Leo and I will sit and discuss the future,” Mas told reporters. “As I have said before, and I will repeat it now: I fully expect that in the opening of our new stadium in 2026 and the opening of our 2026 MLS season after a trophy-laden 2025 season, that Leo Messi will be our number 10.”
Messi was as good as advertised since coming to MLS in 2023. In 39 matches in all competitions, he scored 34 goals and added 18 assists while helping the club win the Leagues Cup and Supporters’ Shield. Additionally, he boosted the club’s profile on both national and global scales, so it isn’t surprising that Inter wants to hold onto him for as long as possible.
However, before signing Messi to an extension, Mas will have to address the club’s vacant head coach position after Gerardo “Tata” Martino stepped down from his position due to “personal reasons.” According to multiple reports, Messi’s former teammate and current Argentina U20 coach Javier Mascherano is the favorite to take over from Martino.
