The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback returned from injury to help his team defeat the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-20 on Saturday, thereby booking a spot for the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game next Sunday. Still harboring his ankle injury, Mahomes was not a guaranteed starter leading up to Saturday’s game.

“It feels better than I thought it was going to be now,” Mahomes said of his ankle following the Chiefs’ win. “Obviously, I have a lot of adrenaline going right now, so we’ll see how it feels. But I’ll hop right in the treatment and try to do whatever I can to be as close to 100 percent by next week. Luckily for us, we played the early game on Saturday, so we get an extra almost half a day that I can let that ankle rest.”

The Chiefs have scheduled an MRI for Mahomes on Sunday in order to gain further clarity on the quarterback’s injury recovery status. The player injured his ankle after falling awkwardly during the first quarter of the Jaguars’ game

Although the Chiefs wanted Mahomes to head to the locker room for X-rays, the 27-year-old player refused, instead choosing to continue the game. He later gave in to the team’s X-ray request, going on to perform some agility tests.
