English striker Harry Kane scored four goals on Tuesday night to help Bayern Munich to a 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb in the opening game of the UEFA Champions League. He also set a new record in the process.

The four goals against Dinamo brought Kane’s UCL goal tally to 33. With that, he became the English player with the most goals in the competition, surpassing Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney, who had 30 over the course of his career.

Curiously, three of the four goals Kane scored against Dinamo came via a penalty kick. The fourth one was a rebound in the penalty area, where he calmly got into the net.

“Amazing game, a bit of a crazy game for sure,” Kane said after the game. “To score all those goals in the end was a great night … To be honest, after the second [penalty] I didn’t really know what to do with the third one, but thankfully I was able to put it away.”

The game between Bayern and Dinamo featured several other records. Bayern’s nine goals were the most goals ever scored by a team in a single match in the history of the competition. Additionally, forward Thomas Muller, who entered the game as a substitute, played his 152nd UEFA Champions League match for Bayern. This is the most UCL appearance by a player with one club.
