Even at the age of 48, Hall of Fame wide receiver Terrell Owens believes he can still play football professionally. And he decided to prove that by joining the Fan Controlled Football (FCF) league for the 2022 season.

Owens will play with the Zappers, where he’ll team up with the former Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel.  FCF is played indoors 7-on-7 with fans having a prominent role in deciding the rosters and selecting the plays.

“I’m looking forward to throwing with Johnny or whomever the quarterback may be,” Owens said in a chat with ESPN. “If it’s Johnny Football, it doesn’t matter if it’s Pee Wee Herman, as long as they throw the ball where it needs to be and … put it in my catch radius, I’m going to do my best to make some stuff happen with it.”

Owens last played in the NFL in 2010, making 72 catches for 983 yards and nine touchdowns for the Cincinnati Bengals. He would go on to sign a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks in 2012 but was released before appearing in a single game. After that, Owens often flirted with returning to NFL while playing in American Flag Football League and exploring Canadian Football League options.

But despite being out of NFL for more than a decade, Owens insists that he is not retired.

“I wasn’t given the opportunity to play. That doesn’t mean I retired,” Owens explained.

Terrell Owens is widely considered one of the best wide receivers to ever play the game. In his 15 seasons in the league, most of which he spent with the San Francisco 49ers, he was named First-Team All-Pro five times and was selected to Pro Bowl in six seasons. Owens made 1,078 receptions for 15,934 yards and 153 touchdowns in his NFL career. He is also the only player in NFL history to score a TD against all 32 NFL teams.
