Greg Schiano stepped down as New England Patriots’ defensive coordinator after spending less than two months on the position. Schiano announced his decision on Thursday stating that need to “spend more time on my faith and family” as the main reason.

“This is not the result of any one event, but rather a realization that I need to spend more time on my faith and family,”- said Schiano. “I don’t want to look back years from now and wish I had done things differently. Therefore, I am taking time away from the game to recalibrate my priorities.”

Schiano’s departure was confirmed by Patriots’ head coach Bill Belichick.

“I respect Coach Schiano greatly and appreciate his contributions to our staff and team,” – said Belichick. “He is a friend who we support completely.”

Greg Schiano joined New England in February, filling the defensive coordinator position left vacant after Matt Patricia left the organization in 2017. Linebackers coach Brian Flores called defensive plays in 2018 but didn’t get the title of a coordinator.

Schiano previously spent three seasons as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator with Ohio State. His last NFL job was being Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ head coach in 2012 and 2013.
