New York Yankees All-Star Gleyber Torres will finish the 2021 MLB season as a second baseman after manager Aaron Boone decided to make some rotations in the team’s lineup following the 7-6 loss to the New York Mets on Sunday. Torres played second base for the first two years of his MLB career before shifting to shortstop in 2020.

Boone’s intention is to take some pressure off Torres following his struggles in recent games. The 24-year-old player racked up 18 errors, second-most in AL, so far in the season after making just eight last year.

“Try to take a little pressure off him,” Boone told reporters on Monday. “We’ll give that a look.”

Torres moving away from the shortstop caused a chain reaction across the Yankees’ infield. As a result, DJ LeMahieu went to third base, while utility Tyler Wade and third baseman Gio Urshela are expected to take turns at shortstop.

Boone hopes this shakeup might get his team back on winning track after going 2-8 in their past ten games.

“I hope it gives us the best look and gives us a spark,” he added via The New York Post.

Gleyber Torres entered the league in 2018 and spent the following two seasons mostly playing at second base. He picked up two All-Star nods as a second baseman, but the Yankees decided to move him to shortstop to cover the loss of Didi Gregorius regardless.

The shift seemed to be working early on, but it is now clear that Torres doesn’t fit the position and that the Yankees will have a long offseason trying to find their shortstop of the future.
