Cameroon will continue their 2022 World Cup campaign without their starting goalkeeper Andre Onana. According to multiple reports, Onana had an argument with manager Rigobert Song that resulted in him being removed from the quad.

Reportedly, Song wanted his goalkeeper to play a more traditional role, being conservative with the ball and not leaving the penalty area. Onana, on the other hand, argued that the style didn’t fit him and wanted to play more with the ball in his legs as modern goalkeepers do.

After a heated discussion between the two, which took place during Saturday’s training session, Song decided it was better that Onana finishes his World Cup campaign early. The Inter Milan goalkeeper left Cameroon’s camp while Song installed Devis Epassy as his No. 1 goalie.

Andre Onana made his debut with Cameroon in 2016 and has since made 34 appearances for the national team. He was part of the side that won third place during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

On a club level, Onana went through Barcelona’s youth ranks but ended up joining Dutch side Ajax before making his professional debut for the La Liga powerhouse. He played 214 games for Ajax, helping the club win three Eredivisie titles, before joining Seria A side Inter Milan on a free transfer this past summer.

Cameroon opened its 2022 World Cup campaign with a 1-0 loss to Switzerland before playing a 3-3 draw against Serbia on Monday. They are currently third in Group G and would have to beat Brazil in their final match to have hopes for the Round of 16.
