New York Giants rookie safety Xavier McKinney, who was primed to have a big impact on the team’s secondary and defense in general, will be out for a few months.

McKinney suffered a fractured foot during practice on Wednesday that required immediate surgery. The former standout safety from Alabama broke his fifth metatarsal, which is a bone located on the outside of the foot.

Doctors say that he will probably miss at least 10 weeks while recovering from the injury, which means that he might have a chance to finally see the field sometime after the Giants bye week in Week 11 of the 2020 season.

McKinney was selected in the second round of the 2020 draft by the Giants with the 36th overall pick. He’s a very versatile defender that can line up at multiple positions in the secondary, a trait that was expected to help add great diversity to the Giants’ defensive scheme.

The Giants will have to rely heavily on their returning safety duo of Jabrill Peppers and Julian Love this season, who both joined the team last year.

Peppers came over in the blockbuster trade that sent star received Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns and Love was a fourth-round draft pick from Notre Dame.
