The New York Giants announced this week that they are un-retiring late Hall of Famer Ray Flaherty’s retired No. 1 jersey and giving it to their rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers.
Sharing the news, the Giants said that Flaherty’s family gave permission for Nabers to wear the No. 1 jersey. After Nabers finishes his pro career or leaves the Giants, the jersey number will be retired once again.
“Thank you to the Flaherty family for allowing me to wear Number 1 for the New York Giants,” Nabers said in a statement. “I understand the responsibility, and I will do everything in my power to honor the Flaherty family and this organization. I will wear the number with great pride. Can’t wait for the season to start.”
Ray Flaherty played for the Giants from 1929 to 1935. During that time, he helped the Giants become NFL champions while also making four First-team All-Pro appearances. After retiring as a player, Flaherty became a coach and later won two NFL Championships with Washington.
After Flaherty retired from professional football, the Giants retired his No. 1 jersey. This marked the first time that a jersey number was retired in professional sports.
Nabers was the Giants’ sixth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. He previously played three years at LSU, where he made 189 receptions for 3,003 yards and 21 touchdowns.
