After a disappointing end of a record-breaking MLS season, Gerardo “Tata” Martino is reportedly stepping down as the head coach of Inter Miami.
According to multiple reports, Martino made the decision due to “personal reasons.” The 62-year-old Argentine coach, who had one year left on his deal, is expected to announce his decision at a press conference later this week.
Martino took over Inter Miami ahead of the 2023 MLS season and was considered a perfect fit for the team. Not only did he have success in the league before, winning the MLS Cup with Atlanta United in 2018, but he also had a pre-existing relationship with the franchise’s new superstar, Lionel Messi.
Martino made an immediate impact in Miami, leading Inter to the Leagues Cup title and the U.S. Open Cup finale in his first season in charge. He followed that up with a stellar campaign in 2024 that saw Inter break the MLS single-season record with 74 points and win the Supporters’ Shield despite Messi missing almost half of the season.
However, Miami’s regular season success failed to translate to the postseason. They were eliminated in the first round by Atlanta United, who barely made the MLS Cup playoffs.
Inter Miami is reportedly already working on identifying Martino’s replacement. Former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez is currently considered to be a front-runner for the job.
