Forward Nick Robertson is staying with the Toronto Maple Leafs in a somewhat surprising turn of events. The Leafs confirmed the news on their social media, revealing that Robertson inked a one-year deal.
Robertson, who was a restricted free agent this offseason, seemed to be on the exit door after requesting a trade from the Maple Leafs back in August. Still, the team’s general manager Brad Treliving reportedly wasn’t particularly interested in moving him leading to an agreement between the two sides.
Under the new contract, Robertson is set to earn $875,000 in base salary for the 2024-25 NHL season. The one-year deal now allows him to hit the free agency next offseason.
After playing in 31 games and contributing with seven points in his first three seasons in the NHL, Robertson finally received an opportunity to make a bigger impact in 2023-24. He ended up making 56 appearances and ending the campaign with 14 goals and 13 assists for 27 points.
Robertson apparently thought he deserved an even more meaningful role, which led to his trade request and contract holdout. But with the training camp nearing and Maple Leafs’ new head coach Craig Berube counting on him, Robertson ended up changing his mind and will now be staying put.
