The Formula 1 returned to Melbourne, Australia, this season and intends to stay there for the foreseeable future. The F1 just announced that they had extended the Australian Grand Prix deal to lock the circuit on the calendar through 2035. The current deal was set to end in 2025.
As part of the agreement, Melbourne’s Albert Park Circuit will also host Formula 2 and Formula 3. The first F2 and F3 races are scheduled for 2023.
“I am delighted to confirm that Melbourne and the Albert Park circuit will continue to be on the Formula 1 calendar until 2035,” said F1’s President and CEO Stefano Domenicali. “The race has always been a favorite for the fans, drivers, and the teams, and Melbourne is an incredible and vibrant international city that is a perfect match for our sport.”
The circuit was previously canceled in 2020 and then skipped entirely in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Upon its return this year, the event broke the record with 419,114 attendees. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was the winner, followed by Red Bull’s Sergio Pérez and Mercedes’ George Russell.
The Australian Grand Prix joined F1’s calendar in 1985 with Adelaide Street Circuit. After 11 years in Adelaide, the race moved to its current grounds of Albert Park. Michael Schumacher is its most successful driver, having won there four times.
