Austrian Bundesliga powerhouse RB Salzburg announced on Monday that former MLS star Jesse Marsch will be the team’s new head coach for the next season. Marsch, who currently serves as an assistant at the club, will take over from Marco Rose, who already agreed to coach German’s Borussia Monchengladbach.

“We have followed his career and development very closely in recent years, and we have spoken often,” – said RB Salzburg sporting director Christoph Freund. “We are completely convinced about him both as a professional and as a person. He knows our philosophy and way of playing football very well.”

“I am really pleased and feel honored to be able to work for this fantastic club as their next coach,” – Marsch added.

Jesse Marsch spent his entire professional career playing in MLS as a midfielder for D.C. United, Chicago Fire, and Chivas USA while also earning two call-ups for USMNT. During his playing career, Marsch managed to win three MLS Cups and several other trophies.

After retiring from soccer as a player, Marsch served as an assistant with USMNT before taking over Montreal Impact in the franchise’s first year in MLS in 2012. He was, however, fired after just one season.

Following a stint with Princeton Tigers, Marsch was named as a head coach of New York Red Bulls in 2015. During his four years with the organization, he posted 76-45-30 record while winning MLS Supporters’ Shield trophy and MLS Coach of the Year award.
