Indiana Fever’s star rookie, Caitlin Clark, entered the WNBA with a reputation for being a world-class shooter. However, Clark has also shown a remarkable ability to distribute the ball that now has her sitting at the top of the league’s single-season assists leaders.
Clark dished nine assists in a 78-74 loss to the Las Vegas Aces on Friday, bringing up her 2024 total to 321. This is now a new WNBA record for most assists in a single season, topping Alyssa Thomas’ previous all-time mark of 316 assists from 2023.
Clark’s record-breaking 317th assist came in the final five minutes of the second quarter when she took an inbound pass and dished the ball to Kelsey Mitchell for a score in the paint.
The 2024 WNBA campaign is shaping up to be the season of records, with Clark also owning a WNBA single-season rookie record for three-pointers and Chicago Sky’s rookie Angel Reese setting a new league record for most rebounds in a season. Additionally, Aces’ star A’ja Wilson broke the WNBA single-season scoring record.
“I think it definitely speaks to the whole entire year and how historic it has been for this league and how great the basketball has been for the league and we’re not even into the playoffs yet,” Clark said after the game. “I think that’s what’s so fun about it, is you’re just going to continue to see records be taken down, but also I think really good basketball, and that’s why it’s been so fun to watch.”
Clark is a runaway favorite to win the WNBA Rookie of the Year award while averaging 19.1 points, 8.4 assists, and 5.8 rebounds per game. She also helped the Fever bounce back after a poor start of the season and lock a playoff spot with a 19-19 record.
