The 2022 British Grand Prix offered Formula 1 fans a thrilling affair that ended with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz claiming his first career win. Sainz previously took part in 150 F1 races without finishing at the top.

The British GP started with a scary crash in which the car of Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyu flipped several times and crashed into the fence. Despite the horrific scene, Guanyu managed to leave the car unscathed. As a result of the crash, Guanyu, Alex Albon (Williams), and George Russell (Mercedes) were out of the race.

The race restarted after a lengthy delay, with Sainz taking advantage of his pole position to keep the leading position, followed by his teammate Charles Leclerc and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. However, a mistake by the Spaniard in Lap 10 saw him being overtaken by Verstappen, and it seemed it would be a smooth ride until the end for the reigning champion. But that was far from the truth.

Just a couple of laps later, Verstappen suffered body damage to his car and slipped towards the back end of the top 10. From that point on, the race turned into a close battle between Sainz, Leclerc, and Lewis Hamilton of the Mercedes.

The trio went back and forth until Lap 39 when Esteban Ocon of Alpine lost power in his car and ended up stranded on the track. Safety Car was deployed to the track and completely changed the complexity of the race.

Ferrari opted to keep Leclerc, who was in the lead at that point, on track while the majority of drivers behind him went into the pit to get fresh tires. Once the race restarted, Leclerc couldn’t hold on and was overtaken by Sainz, Hamilton, and Sergio Perez of Red Bull.

It was a smooth ride for Sainz from that point on, while the real drama happened behind him. Leclerc, Hamilton, and Perez exchanged positions several times in just a matter of minutes. In the end, it was Perez who managed to finish as a runner-up, while Hamilton also squeezed in to get on the podium.
