USL Championship side Memphis 901 FC announced on Monday that former USMNT goalie Bill Hamid would join the team for the 2023 season. Hamid brings a wealth of experience to Memphis, having played in MLS and Europe for more than a decade.

Hamid will join as a free agent after his contract with MLS side DC United expired last year. The 32-year-old was linked with a move to Europe, with Scottish club Dundee United being interested, but he ended up opting to stay in the United States.

901 FC sporting director Tim Howard, himself a former USMNT goalie as well, called Hamid’s arrival “potentially be the greatest signing in club history.”

“He comes to 901 FC as he enters the prime of his career,” said Howard in a statement. “Bill has a winning pedigree, having lifted trophies domestically and internationally. Most importantly, we believe that his time spent as a member of the USMNT will prove pivotal to our locker room and on-field success.”

Bill Hamid played the majority of his professional career with DC United, spending 14 years with the team across two stints. With DC, Hamid won the U.S. Open Cup in 2013 and was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2014. He also played with Danish club FC Midtjylland during the 2017–18 season.

Hamid received his debut for the United States men’s national team in 2012 and made eight appearances for the first team. His last call-up was in 2020.
