34-year-old Marcelo has joined Greek side Olympiakos as a free agent, the club announced on Friday. This comes after he left the Brazilian national left long-time club Real Madrid this summer after his contract expired, bidding farewell to the club in an emotional ceremony.

The full-back signed a one-year contract with Olympiakos which included the option for a one-year extension. While retirement had been discussed as a possibility for Marcelo, he decided that the time had not yet come to hang up his boots, instead opting to continue his playing career in Europe by joining the reigning Greek champions.

During his time in Madrid, Marcelo became the most decorated player in Real Madrid’s 120-year history, winning 25 trophies in his 15 years with the club, including five UEFA Champions League trophies.

“We’ve spoken and we’ve decided it’s best like that,” Marcelo stated after being an unused sub in Madrid’s Champions League victory in May. “I’ve already done everything I had to do at Madrid. I’ve been lucky to be here for 15 and a half years at the best club in the world.”
