Legendary striker Wayne Rooney is no longer the manager of the English Championship side Plymouth Argyle. The former DC United player and head coach agreed to mutual contract termination with the club after a run of nine games without a win.
Rooney leaves Plymouth firmly at the bottom of the Championship standings with 18 points from 23 games.
“To the Green Army thanks for making the games at Home Park so special, they are memories that we will share forever,” Rooney said in a statement. “Plymouth Argyle will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will continue to look out for and take interest in their results.”
Rooney was hired by Plymouth in May on a three-year contract. He was expected to lift the club that barely avoided relegation in 2023-24 but failed to do so. In 25 matches, he managed only five wins and had 14 losses.
Wayne Rooney started coaching with Derby County in 2020, serving as a player/manager. After Derby was relegated to English League One at the end of the 2021-22 season, Rooney left the club and quickly found a new job with DC United.
His time in MLS as a manager wasn’t as successful as his time as a player. Rooney ended his stint with DC United after the 2023 season, during which the club finished 12th in the Eastern Conference.
Before his spell with Plymouth, Rooney also managed Birmingham City. Birmingham fired him after less than three months in charge, following just two wins in 15 matches.
