German defender Jerome Boateng has found a new club after spending the better part of the summer on the free-agent market. Boateng will now suit up for Lyon after he inked a two-year deal with Ligue 1 side on Tuesday.

Boateng spent the previous 10 years playing for Bayern Munich, but Bundesliga powerhouse decided earlier this year that he won’t be offered a new contract. The 32-year-old attracted interest from several profile clubs, including Tottenham, Arsenal, and Roma, in the past weeks before deciding to pick France as his next destination.

One of the reasons why Boateng rebuffed the interest from other clubs in favor of Lyon might be the opportunity to have more playing time. He has a chance to be a regular starter with the French club, with his odds becoming even higher following the suspension of Brazilian defender Marcelo. If he had joined a bigger club, however, he would probably have to settle for a bench role.

During his time with Bayern Munich, Jerome Boateng was irreplaceable in the team’s backline. He played 364 games in all competitions, providing the club with a reliable and stable presence in defense while also managing to contribute with 10 goals and 25 assists. He won 25 trophies with Bayern, including nine Bundesliga titles and two UEFA Champions Leagues.

Boateng previously also played for Hertha BSC, Hamburger SV, and Manchester City.
