Everton defender Ramiro Funes Mori has revealed that he had hoped to return to River Plate in Argentina in order to boost his chances of winning selection to the Argentinian squad which will compete in the 2018 world cup during the summer.

Funes Mori has been out of action since last March due to a serious knee injury but is now fully fit again after participating in warm-up games for the Toffees U-23’s side.

The 27-year-old was also included in the Everton traveling squad for their game against Stoke City last weekend though he ultimately ended up not playing.

Funes Mori has revealed that he hoped to return to his native Argentina in order to boost his fitness and chances of representing his country during the world cup.

“I wanted to go back to River to get up to pace and get to the World Cup well, so I told my manager, but it was difficult, so it’s over and everything is fine.”
