The group stage of EURO 2024 wrapped on Wednesday, determining the 16 national teams that will play in the knockout stage. But the upcoming matchups were just part of the story of the day, with Georgia’s upset of Portugal dominating the headlines.

Georgia, which plays its first European Championship, got a memorable 2-0 win over Portugal thanks to goals from Napoli’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Metz’s Georges Mikautadze. This marked the biggest upset in EURO history as Georgia is currently sitting 74th in the FIFA Rankings while Portugal is considered the sixth-best national side in the world.

Thanks to a win over Portugal, Georgia finished third in Group F and will move to the knockout stage as one of the best third-place teams. Georgia’s opponent in the Round of 16 is Spain, which finished first in Group A and is the only team in the tournament that won all three matches of the group stage.

Despite the loss, Portugal retained its top spot in Group F and will now play Slovenia in the knockout stage. Turkiye, who finished second in the same group, will play Austria.

Other Round of 16 matchups include Switzerland vs. Italy, Germany vs. Denmark, England vs. Slovakia, France vs. Belgium, and Romania vs. Netherlands.
