The Washington Commanders are reportedly in the midst of finalizing a deal to make Eric Bieniemy the team’s new offensive coordinator, multiple sources revealed. The team aims to have the agreement signed and sealed on Saturday.
Bieniemy has been approached to replace Scott Turner, who was fired on January 10 after three seasons with the team. During those seasons, Washington struggled offensively, ranking 27th in yards per game and 28th in points per game. Entering his fourth year with the team, Ron Rivera will hope that the 2023 season will be the one where he steers the team right.
Having served as the offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs for the past five seasons, Bieniemy lifted the team to two Super Bowl championships.
Prior to accepting the job with the Commanders, Bielniemy had interviewed for several head coaching roles. He was unsuccessful in each attempt, however, with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes expressing his disbelief.
“It’s so past deserved,” Mahomes commented. “He’s done everything the right way. He’s been a part of this offense and this team for so long, holds everybody accountable, is creative in making up plays for us. I don’t know why he hasn’t been hired, but it’s been great for us.”
