Former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel will become the new head coach of the England national team.  Tuchel’s hiring is expected to be officially confirmed by the English Football Association (FA) by the end of the week.

Tuchel will succeed Gareth Southgate, who stepped down from his role as England’s head coach after the 2024 EURO. Southgate spent eight years in the position, leading the country to two consecutive EURO finals but failing to win a trophy.

Since Southgate left, FA has reportedly been in contact with several high-profile managers. They talked with Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola, who rejected the opportunity, while also considering English managers like Graham Porter and Eddie Howe. However, they ended up settling on Tuchel due to his proven track of success.

Tuchel started his managerial career in his native Germany, where he coached Mainz 05 and Borussia Dortmund. He found his biggest success with Paris Saint-Germain, leading the club to two consecutive Ligue 1 titles, and Chelsea, with whom he captured UEFA Champions League trophy in 2020-21. His last job was with Bundesliga powerhouse Bayern Munich.

Since departing Bayern last summer, Tuchel has been linked with several clubs, including Manchester United. He reportedly even entered the contract talks with the Red Devils before they ended up deciding to stick with Erik ten Hag.

England’s national team is currently managed by Lee Carsley, manager of the U21 team, on an interim basis. Carsley oversaw four matches, recording three wins and one loss.
