The Philadelphia Eagles placed their starting tight end, Dallas Goedert, on Injured Reserve on Saturday. Goedert, who is dealing with a knee injury, is expected to be ready to return for the playoffs.
Goedert got hurt in a 19-24 win over the Baltimore Ravens last week. He was initially ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers but will now miss at least three more games. Philly has five games remaining in the regular season.
Goedert was in the midst of a strong campaign before he got hurt. He had 38 catches for 441 yards and two touchdowns.
While the Eagles will definitely miss Goedert on the field, they likely believe he will be more important to them in the postseason. Placing him on the IR ensures he gets enough time to recover and be a difference-maker when it matters the most.
The Eagles still haven’t secured the playoffs, but this is considered a pure technicality. They are currently riding an eight-game winning streak and sit at the top of the NFC East with a 10-2 record. Washington Commanders, who are second, have an 8-5 record.
In Goedert’s absence, the Eagles are expected to turn to Grant Calcaterra, their sixth-round pick in 2022. Calcaterra already saw significant action this season, catching 17 passes for 216 yards. Veteran C.J. Uzomah and second-year tight end E. J. Jenkins are also expected to see more prominent roles.
