Philadelphia Eagles managed to lure back veteran quarterback Josh McCown from retirement in 2019, and now they want him to keep him with the organization for 2020 as well. According to several reports, Eagles are keen on making McCown part of their coaching staff.

Philadelphia Inquirer reported that during the team’s exit interviews, Philly’s general manager Howie Roseman met with McCown to discuss a coaching role. The player also talked with coach Doug Pederson and owner Jeffrey Lurie, which is an unusual practice for the organization.

Reportedly, Eagles discussed the role of an offensive coordinator with McCown, but it remains unknown whether he was actually offered the position. The 40-year-old, however, decided to pass on the opportunity as he would like to continue his playing career.

Josh McCown is considered a journeyman in the NFL, having played with nine different organizations during his 18 years in the league. McCown officially retired from football following the 2018 season, joining ESPN as an analyst. However, after the Eagles lost both of their backup QBs to injuries, he unretired and signed with Philadelphia in August 2019.

After playing just several snaps as a relief during the regular season, McCown had a more prominent role in the playoffs. Following Carson Wentz’s injury early in the NFC Wild-Card game against Seattle Seahawks, McCown stepped in and completed 18 out of 24 passes attempted, throwing for 174 yards. This was his first career playoff appearance.

McCown has played 102 games in NFL (76) as a starter and has a 60.2 career completion percentage with 17,731 passing yards and 98 passing touchdowns.
